Earth Prayers

For the last while I have been immersing myself in a little book called Earth Prayers 365 prayers, poems and invocations for honouring the earth. Here are two.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives maybe,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in the beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax  their lives with forethought
of grief .I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free

Wendell Berry

Momentarily delayed within the circular comforting warmth
Of the early evening fire.
I weave fantastical images in the picture frames of life
Primitive unknowing longing momentarily released.
What was it that I remembered? what was it that I saw?
Buried deep in the embers of generational DNA.

This I like.Much better than than reclusive poet(ess) whose name was on a "need to know "basis.
I wonder who this could be :-)

Momentarily I was not so sure which little book the second one was taken from ;). Nice paradox in last line as there is no biological information in ashes. Maybe in embers though... I like that.

The headline of the first one is "The peace of wild things" by the way...might be of interest.
